Are generic car power adaptors OK to run 12V TVs STBs, PDAs etc?

I see these units allow for the voltage to be switched, but not the amps - does that mean the devices simply pull what they need? Does it also follow that if the individual devices e.g. PDA are not fused that damage may be caused? Thanks b
